The Photographer

I am an amateur wildlife photographer who specialises in Macro photography and I mainly concentrate my hobby on capturing images of the flora and fauna that can be found on the Mendip hills in Somerset.

Interest in wildlife began during my childhood. I grew up in Formby on Merseyside, a town made famous in wildlife circles due to the Red Squirrel Reserve. My attachment to the West Country came about initially through family holidays which included visits to Cheddar Gorge and the Mendip hills.

In my early twenties I moved to the West Country and now live in Axbridge, Somerset with my wife and daughter. It is a beautiful town nestled against the Mendip Hills, whose history can be traced back nearly 1000 years. Not a complete accident that I have settled close to where I used to holiday as a child.

I am amazed at the detail and complexity of such small plants and animals that are just not that obvious with the naked eye alone, however, I do from time to time, try my hand at other aspects and styles of photography. I am also a member of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

I strive to improve my skills as a photographer, promoting my images through this website, not just as a showcase for the images but also as a record to highlight the broad colour and diversity of the wildlife that can be found across the Mendip hills.

My Equipment:

Prior to the days of digital cameras, I dabbled using a couple of film SLR’s. The first SLR I ever owned was a Pentax P30n, later on I bought a Canon EOS300 with a Sigma 70-300, I decided to stick with Canon mainly because it was familiar and my Sigma 70-300 lens would still work on digital once I had sent it back to be chipped.

The first digital SLR I owned was a Canon EOS 350D, which I used with the above mentioned lens. The image quality of the lens was not the best, but it did allow me to experiment a bit as it also had a macro switch that would allow 1:2 magnification at 300mm. So from this point on, I became more and more interested in macro photography. Over the last few years and after reading the reviews and looking at what other like minded photographers were using, I am currently using the following equipment:

• Canon EOS5D MkII
• Canon EOS7D MkII
• Canon MP-E65mm f2.8 1-5x
• Canon 24-105mm f4 L IS
• Canon 180mm f3.5
• Canon 300mm f4 L IS
• Canon 1.4 extender
• Gitzo tripod
• Manfrotto 410 Junior Geared head
• Novoflex Castel-Q focus rail
• Newport 423 Linear Stage
• Lowepro Vertex 200
• Lastolite Reflectors
• Wimberley plamps

My images are catalogued and processed using:

• Adobe Lightroom
• Adobe Photoshop CS5
• Zerene Stacker
